Paparoa Pirates Red Vs Pirates Blue!

Last week they played each other. It was a close game. Reece and Johnny both scored a few times, and Ava got her first try! There may have been others who got tries too, don’t quote me on that. It was a very close game (but they don’t keep score). Traci. Thanks again Traci for the fabulous photos :-)

Super Subtraction!

We have been busy taking away, finding the difference between two numbers, counting back from a number and using the 'minus'/ 'take away'/ 'subtract' symbol. We found this cool song and have been watching it on our new TV.

Pirate Subtraction Song

The children have been working hard with subtraction. They have been counting back from the bigger number, covering holes on the Numicon pieces and drawing subtraction stories with flowers, rugby balls, lollipops and all kinds of wonderful things! The children have been using Maths vocabulary such as:  take-away, minus, difference, count back, subtract, symbol, equals, makes, leaves.

All dressed up for the school disco!

Thanks Jo for sending in these cool photos of Nicholas, Alexander and Layton! They look very cool!

Max the Science teacher

Max enjoyed our Science Inquiry so much that he decided to set up his own learning station at home for his little brother Lawson! Max remembered that lemon juice and baking soda were important for making things fizz... he also showed Lawson the mentos and cola experiment! What a great teacher you are Max, thanks so much for the photo Candice :-)

There was lots of planning going on in the construction room. Lots of children drew detailed plans on paper before they started building. Awesome thinking happening! Lots of children practiced their peeling skills with Mrs G. The carrot sticks were yummy thanks. This week we began a new set of activities for our next 3 week block. We had amazing huts outside, creative kids making wonderful things in our craft room, chocolate crackle with Mrs G, very detailed plasticine models, creative dance going on with scarves in Room 16 and lots of performances going on in our theatre room! We are looking forward to next week! Discovery Learning Term 3 Weeks 6 + 7

This term, our Key Competency focus is 'Thinking'. The children have been very busy planning, solving problems and finding alternative ways to reach a goal. We started our Science Inquiry this week. This week we have been reading books written by Christchurch author Gavin Bishop. Thank you for bringing your Gavin Bishop books to school. Max was especially proud of his signed copy of 'Bruiser'. Gavin Bishop wrote this book for the Christchurch rebuild. The children enjoyed drawing and cutting out their own 'Bruisers'. Check out Gavin Bishop's website http://www.gavinbishop.com

NZ Author Study - Pamela Allen..... Potato People!

We have been reading lots of books written by Pamela Allen. Lots of you had some of her books at home and we found some hiding in our school library. One of our favourites was a book called 'Potato People'. The children were so interested in how they were made, we decided to make some of our own!

Obstacle Course Fun - Discovery Learning Week 1

These little thinkers planned carefully before they started putting out the equipment. The children worked so well together to create amazing obstacle courses. Some planned on big paper, some used chalk and planned outside. It was interesting to see how the obstacle courses were changed and added to, making them quite different to the original plans! There was even a 'snake pit' made with wooden planks and skipping ropes! The children worked out a way to get across the snakes by building a bridge. It was great to see the children setting challenges for each other and reflecting on their designs.

Gymnastics

We had our first session at The Christchurch School of Gymnastics this week. We all had a wonderful time balancing, jumping, swinging, climbing, hanging and doing all sorts of exciting things! Check out this video to see the little gymnasts in action!
